Researchers at Lund University (Sweden), led by prof. Leif Salford, who previously (1992 to 1997) were confirmed by biological experiments in damage to the blood-brain barrier, possibly dangerous passage of harmful substances such as serum albumin (but could also be carbohydrates, proteins, microorganisms, antibiotics) from the bloodstream to the brain tissue, have recently shown that irradiating for 2 hours, the brain tissue of mice with the electromagnetic field generated by a GSM phone, with values \u200b\u200bfrom 100 to 1000 times lower than those recommended by the Council of the Union European protection from acute effects (Recommendation 1999/519/EC, 12/07/1999) are irreversibly damaged neurons in the cerebral cortex, hippocampus and basal ganglia [3].
Also last year, researchers at Tel Aviv University have shown that irradiation in vitro, the frequencies of mobile phones, human lymphoid cells with electromagnetic field levels comparable to those of that recommendation, is induced aneuploidy (chromosomal instability) which is a major genomic mutation, and therefore a possible cause of cancer [4]. Those researchers have also shown that the phenomenon is independent of thermal effect (acute) due to electromagnetic radiation.
few months ago, the researchers Henry Lai and Narendra Singh of the University of Seattle, have shown that exposure in vivo of mice to the magnetic field generated by the transmission and transformation equipment is causing their brain cells, breakage of DNA strands, increases apoptosis (natural cell suicide) and necrosis. This is for short-term exposures of at least 24 hours to magnetic fields of 10 microTesla. The effects are cumulative, ie increase with duration of exposure [5].
What is most upsetting is that the predicted level of exposure coincides with the one established in July 2003 by the Italian government for existing plants and should protect, according to public administrators, even by long-term effects. Instead, the global epidemiological research has shown, through a sharing of IARC, the WHO body, which shows in microTesla values \u200b\u200babove 0.4 (which is 25 times lower than the predicted value) doubles the risk of childhood leukemia [6]. Recent research epidemiological also showed that pregnant women exposed to magnetic fields, also in frequency, exceeding 1.6 microTesla incur a risk up to 7 times greater than suffer miscarriage [7, 8].
What is even more upsetting is that the recommendation of the Council of the European Union, established on the basis of the ICNIRP guidelines, asking not to expose the population to protection from acute effects, with values \u200b\u200bwell above 100 microTesla, ie a value 10 times greater than that which determines the acute effects in the brains of these mice (10 microTesla) and more than 250 times greater than the threshold value for doubling the risk of childhood leukemia (0.4 microTesla). A of the leading exponents of ICNIRP is also co-author of the Karolinska Institute, where he is Deputy Director of the Department of Environmental Medicine.
Our great fear is that public exposure to EMF are retracing the same dramatic experiences already lived in the case of asbestos, thalidomide, vinyl chloride, DDT, mad cow disease, tobacco, combustion of hydrocarbons, which have caused many tragedies before it was recognized as "political" their mortal danger.
